Industrial Design - An Important Part Of A Company
Industrial design is the practical application of both art and science to improve a product in its utilitarian and aesthetic features, in order to increase its market value. Such designing can be done before a product is formally launched or later for improving upon the product.
The goal of industrial design is creating a favourable perception of the item. The consumers should see the product as worthy and valuable enough to spend money on. The desired result in such cases can be achieved by enhancing the features as well as appearance of the product, in order to make the product capable of attracting several customers.
An extensive research into the buying habits of customers and their likes and dislikes is the first step towards designing a particular product. This step is then followed by sketching, making models, prototyping and final testing before circulation of the item in the market. These days, there is a popular trend of making use of 3D software and CAD applications for making these tasks easier.
The primary goal of industrial design is enhancement of the overall feel of the product. Designers need to concentrate upon many factors other than the looks of the product. These include durability, utility, ergonomics and the convenience of usage of the product. Designers can also reduce the cost of production by bringing about some changes in the design of the product.
Industrial design is not restricted to the above aspects but also includes other factors like product packaging, analysis of the market demand for the product, and also the study of the consumer’s response to the design of the product. Hence industrial designers go through years of special training prior to working on a real product.
Some of the famous industrial designers of the modern era are Jonathan Ive, who is the designer of the iMac; Brooks Stevens, the well known designer of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and Raymond Loewy, famous for the Coca-Cola bottle.
